Early last year, Pittsburgh punk band Teddy Duchamp’s Army called it a day. But four members of that group – vocalist Zack Furness, guitarists Mike Rock and Stephen McMillen and bassist Jake Reinhart, carried on and with drummer Jeff Kopanic, Voice In The Wire was formed.

The result is Signals In Transmission, the band’s debut disc. Recorded over an eight-day span in February, Signals In Transmission is quite an impressive debut that blends energetic punk with catchy melodies and riffs. Nowhere on the disc is this more evident than the excellent “Under The Pavement.” Starting with a quiet drum and guitar bit, all hell soon breaks loose with bass and heavier guitar and drums joining in, along with Furness’ catchy, aggressive vocals. Some very cool guitar effects close out the number.

The opening track, “Ash Black,” is another stomping number with a very effective middle-eighth where things slow down for a few seconds before returning to all-out mayhem. “Follow The Trail Of The Psyched” features some marvelous drumming along with a brief, though superb solo from McMillen. Anti-Flag’s Chris #2 adds some vocals to another catchy track, “Mark Each Word,” and “Steeltown Fight Song,” with its nice instrumental buildup, memorable chorus and fine lyrics, marks a great way to close a solid first release.

Voice In The Wire head out for a 40-date, U.S.-spanning tour beginning in October in support of Signals In Transmission.
